Invisible Disabilities: Seeing Beyond What We See

Blue text on a spot-lit white brick background reads "I Am Invisible No More - Invisible Disabilities Week 2026 October 18 - 24" next to the logo for invisible disabilities dot org.

October 18–24 is Invisible Disabilities Week, a time to recognize the many people living with disabilities that are not immediately apparent. Unlike disabilities that may be visible or readily understood, invisible disabilities can affect a person’s ability to move, think, communicate, work, learn, or participate in everyday activities without there being any outward sign of the challenge. A person who appears healthy may nevertheless be managing significant limitations—and may be expending considerable energy simply to do things that others take for granted.

Invisible disabilities remind us of how easily we can make assumptions based on what we see. We might wonder why someone needs a particular accommodation, uses a mobility aid only occasionally, needs to sit down, leaves an event early, or seems unable to participate in the way we expect. Instead of judging what we cannot see, we can choose curiosity, compassion, and trust. We can make our congregations places where people do not feel compelled to explain or prove their needs in order to be welcomed and supported.

As Unitarian Universalists, we declare that every person is inherently worthy and has the right to flourish with dignity, love, and compassion. Invisible Disabilities Week offers an opportunity to consider whether our physical spaces, programs, expectations, and attitudes truly reflect that commitment. Sometimes inclusion begins with something very simple: believing people when they tell us what they need, offering flexibility, and remembering that we never know the whole story of another person's life simply by looking at them.
