Horizon Community Garden Notes

Lynn Hendee - Garden Manager

Horizon Community Garden WorkdayWe are planning our first garden work day on Saturday, March 2nd, 2019 starting at 9am, so mark your calendars. Joel Woiton has offered to take the lead on construction of the garden beds, with help from other Horizon members.  We plan to construct the garden frames, place and level the frames into the garden, spread mulch along paths/perimeter, then start preparing beds so we are ready to start planting! Bring shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows and gloves, if you have them. Please plan to join us. No experience necessary, just a willingness to get a little dirty!

So much has been happening with the with the Horizon Community Garden in the past weeks!  Our open house was a great success. It was exciting to have such a wonderful turnout and to see the enthusiasm of our budding garden community! We enjoyed the chance to meet each other and members of The Giving Garden who are providing support and mentoring us as we launch our project. We received applications for plots from our first gardeners and we learned about the garden plans from Rebecca.

The physical garden is starting to take shape. The ailing tree within the garden borders has been taken down and shredded for us to use as mulch. The grading of the plot started last week and was delayed due to rain. It was completed this week and the installation of the water line started immediately. We are gathering materials, tools and supplies. The area is starting to look like a garden! Our garden team is growing and I was thrilled to take on the role as Garden Team Chair.

Come grow with us!

This garden will be open to Horizon members and citizens of Carrollton and neighboring communities. Garden beds will be rented annually for a nominal fee. A few of the garden membership requirements are:

  • Gardeners will donate 50% of their garden produce to charitable agencies
  • Garden members agree to spend an average of two hours per month working in the garden on activities outside of their own bed.
  • Garden members agree to sign up for and complete three harvests and/or deliveries during the year. Harvests are on Saturday mornings starting in spring through December.

We are looking for volunteers who can help create the garden and provide ongoing support. There are many different jobs and tasks and projects that will need to be done, so even if you don’t have a green thumb, you can help. If you would like to be put on the email list for garden volunteers and committee members send an email titled “Horizon Community Garden Volunteer” to This email address is being protected from spambots. We will be mentored in our creation of the community garden by the Giving Garden of Carrollton, which currently operates 32 beds rented out on a yearly basis to nearby neighbors. They often have a waiting list and are excited to be able to partner with us to help feed our hungry neighbors. Our shared goal is to provide a sustainable community garden opportunity for the citizens of Carrollton and neighboring communities, without regard to demographic or socioeconomic status.

Community service will be an integral goal of Horizon’s Community Garden. Gardeners will donate 50% of their garden produce, based on either weight or count, to designated charitable organizations.

In addition to monetary gifts to build the garden, we will also accept in-kind donations. For more information about in-kind donations, contact Horizon Administrator Rebecca Stanczak This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
