Social Justice Ministry

Service is Our Prayer

As part of our covenant with each other and as a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) of congregations, Horizon UU Church is committed to promoting world peace, human and civil rights, economic justice, and environmental conservation.

We respect the inherent worth and dignity of every person, and we envision a world free from oppression and injustice where all can realize their full human rights. While we cannot always take action on every issue that arises, we do our best to make our congregation, our communities, our denomination, and our world a better place.

Social Justice Ministry

The mission of the Social Justice Ministry is to provide knowledge to the congregation of social justice needs. The group coordinates the participation of Horizon and its members in offering financial support, community service, or other assistance for social justice issues.

The Social Justice Ministry conducts activities in these areas:

•  Religious Liberty
•  Human Rights
•  Economic Justice
•  Environment
•  Animal Welfare
•  Health and Family
•  Bisexual / Gay / Lesbian / Transgender Equality
•  Peace and Conflict Resolution

The Social Justice Ministry meets on Friday evenings to organize and plan activities. If you are interested in attending the committee meeting as either a guest or as a member, contact the group leader, Paul Panek via socialjustice@horizonuu.org.

Metrocrest Social Services

Volunteering at Metrocrest Social Services helps those of us with a little money in the bank, food on the table, and a roof over our heads, to understand what it would be like if some or none of those basic qualities of life existed.

Metrocrest Social Services provides short-term emergency services to improve life situations of Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, and Coppell, Texas, residents. They offer information and referral, employment information, emergency assistance with food, rent, utilities, clothing, and other limited financial assistance.

Share the Plate

Share the Plate Sundays occur the third Sunday of the month as a way to involve the membership in more and diversified social outreach. The way it works is that all the money collected during the offertory that is not designated specifically for pledge payments goes to outreach.

See our Links page for a list of some of the organizations that have received a Share the Plate Collection from Horizon.
