Our Scheduled Adult Religious Explorations for
December 2011 & January 2012:
Sundays 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Library
Dec. 25:
No ARE this morning. We figure most people will be home this early on Christmas Day!
Jan. 1:
Christian Chalice Circle. Facilitated by Peggy Gill and Amber Lane. For information, email uuchristians@horizonuu.org.
Jan. 8:
Resilience. Facilitated by Carol Riddle. Carol will present about Steven and Sybil Wolin’s book, The Resilient Self. The book is consistent with Horizon’s mission for “Growing spiritually healthy people who promote love and justice in the world,” and details the five steps for teaching resilience to children.
Jan. 15:
Forum. Facilitated by John Myers. Beginning in February, 2011, John began using Karen Armstrong's latest book, "Twelve Steps to a Compassionate Life," in which she builds the case for expanding the Golden Rule to all aspects of our living. Each chapter has exercises for achieving this goal. The Chalice Circle model for interactive learning will continue.
Jan. 22:
Discussion. Facilitated by Kay Darwin. "Why is there a statue of Unitarian minister Thomas Starr King on the grounds of the state capitol of California in Sacramento?"
Jan. 29:
This Emotional Life. Facilitated by Charles Frugé. I highly recommend watching Daniel Gilbert’s entire three-part PBS series on our emotional life. This morning we will watch a brief selection about The Secret to Happiness and Finding Happiness – you may be surprised (or not) to hear Dr. Gilbert’s answers based on psychological research. We will follow with a discussion about how this might relate to what we do at Horizon.
Wednesday evenings - weekly 7:00-8:30 pm Portable, Rm 8
Buddhist Sangha. Facilitated by Senior Minister, the Rev. Dennis Hamilton. This is an ongoing exploration of the Four Noble Truths and the Eight Fold Path, the essential teaching of Buddhism. Rev. Hamilton’s email contact: DHamilton@uuma.org , in case of changes.
And….always check the weekly newsletter for short profiles on classes and late-breaking announcements. If you email are@horizonuu.org you will get a quick response from one of the committee chairs – Kay Darwin, Kent Darwin, or Charles Frugé.
