Art on the Horizon

Art on the Horizon

Art on the Horizon's mission is to reach out to the local community of artists who visually reflect the spirit of our church.  We in return, reflect back to the community the spirit of our faith.

Horizon’s fine art ministry enhances the cultural and spiritual experience of those who attend worship service and provides support to the visual arts community in our area.  Scheduled artists are invited to organize opening receptions for the public to view their works, and exhibitions can be viewed by the public any time the church is open, or by appointment.  Exhibitions are six weeks in duration. Local artists are invited to have a solo exhibition with any sales providing a 20% commission to the church.

Lisa Cardenas
Color, Passion, Dreams:  A collection of Oil Paintings
April 22 – May 27, 2012

Lisa Cardenas’ style is largely defined by her use of various materials such as brushes, knives, plastics and other objects. “I do not look for a material to create what it is I want to paint, rather I tend to use paint to help me create the painting. I don’t actually paint but instead construct and deconstruct layers of paint in order to recreate my vision on canvas. Impulsive yet disciplined, I apply many layers of paint, scraping back, scratching into and scarring the surface in order to challenge the existing state of the work. This provides greater control and freedom and allows for a more profound intimate visual image.” Lisa has come to realize that calligraphy has influenced her understanding of the fluidity of not just on the application of ink but also how oils can work as ink. “Each painting is about the relationships that form its composition and the ongoing dialogue among the elements of color, shape and texture”, explains Cardenas.

“These elements are not just metaphors or representations of a real world; they are a real world. My work continues to evolve in a world in which non-materiality and materiality, mind and body, co-exist. The expressive and emotional content are driven by my own inner beliefs, which break free of boundaries. That is how I like it, no set plan, no holding back and fearless of experimentation. Although the casual observer might see my style as structured, they actually comprise a landscape solely within my imagination. I use no preliminary sketches, plans, or notions of what is going to transpire. I often notice different characters and forms developing in the middle of the process, which I then embrace and allow to develop at their own will. I establish a dialogue with my creative process, and the work shows me what is required for its completion. For me, abstract painting stems from a journey of self, a dream, an imagination, and an exercise in artistic expression that is hoped to affect the viewer in a lyrical and personal way.”
Lisa attended Collin Community College and earned an Associate of Arts degree in 2006, graduating Cum Laude. Her artwork was published in Abstract Drawings, Inkling Magazine-Tomball College, Volume 12, pp 12, Houston, Tomball Texas.   In 2008, she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Drawing and Painting, Cum Laude, from the University of North Texas. Following this she enrolled for a second Bachelor’s degree in Art History with a minor in Spanish.

Presently, Lisa is a member of Plano Art Association, Irving Art Association, Texas, and Dang! Dallas Artistic Networking Group. She continues to express herself through the mediums of mixed media, pencil, charcoal, pastels, watercolors, oil, acrylic, print, sculpture, and collage. “I paint, study, read, learn, improve, and experiment in new mediums as often as I can in my free time.” Lisa is currently a student at the University of Dallas enrolled in the Arts and Technology MFA Program.

We are pleased to share Lisa Cardenas’ paintings with the Horizon community.  Regular art shows in our sanctuary are a way to reach out to the local community of artists who visually reflect the spirit of our church.  We in return, reflect back to the community the spirit of our faith.
