Rev. Lora Brandis began her ministry at Horizon in August 2016. When asked to describe her vision for this ministry, she said, “The ministry I hope for will be a balanced one with equal time given to the inner work each soul yearns for and the outer work that calls us as religious people to be justice seekers.” For Rev. Lora, coming to Horizon is coming home since she spent time here in a ministerial internship from August 2009 to May 2010.

Prior to returning to Horizon as the settled minister, Lora served as the settled minister for Conejo Valley UU Fellowship in Thousand Oaks, CA. Prior to that, Lora served as a consulting minister for two congregations 150 miles apart: South Valley UU Society in Salt Lake City, UT, and Pocatello UU Fellowship in Idaho. Lora has also served as a hospital chaplain at Parkland and Baylor University Medical Center, both in Dallas.

Lora received a BFA in Theatre and a BA in Ibero-American Studies from SMU. She received her M.Div. from SMU / Perkins School of Theology in May of 2010. Ministry is a second career for Lora. She has extensive experience in non-profit management, including serving as the director of development and public relations for Nexus Recovery Center.

Rev. Lora and her husband, Frank Peña, have four adult children, one granddaughter and a cat named Tex. They love to cook, challenging each other at Jeopardy and going to movies and plays. Lora is a fan of science fiction; Frank is not.
